Just before 1:30 in the afternoon, officers from the Fort Wayne Police Department arrived on the scene of a crash that had occurred in the parking lot of a Meijer store that is located off State Road 37. The police have speculated that the motorist may have experienced a “medical episode,” and early on Friday, they provided further information regarding their inquiry.

While the driver of a Lincoln SUV was attempting to park, the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated for reasons that are unknown. The SUV was responsible for hitting the pedestrian and a number of vehicles. Shortly after the beginning of emergency medical treatment by a law enforcement officer, the victim was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has not made an official identification of the victim; however, the victim’s family has recognized him as Robert Harter, 76 years old, an Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam. Harter’s service was during the Vietnam War. At some time in the future, the coroner’s office will make public the official cause of death that was determined.
