Richard Wicklen Obituary, Death – Richard W. Van Wicklen served as chief of the Fort Apache Hose Company #5 for 57 years, before retiring from that position. During that time, he was also employed there. The Chiefs Office, Officers, and Members of Fort Apache Hose Co #5, along with the Freeport Fire Department, are deeply saddened to report his passing.
His death is also being mourned by the Freeport Fire Department. The Freeport Fire Department is another organization that is saddened by his passing away. One of the numerous communities and institutions that are upset by his decision to leave is the Freeport Fire Department.
In 1966, when he first joined the Freeport Fire Department, Van Wicklen was a member of the organization’s ranks of volunteers. Today, he serves as Chief of the department.
Prior to that, he had been a member of the firefighting crew of the Garden City Fire Department for the entirety of his professional life.
Both of his sons, Michael and Richard T. Van Wicklen, are very involved members of the community. Both of them volunteer their time with the Fort Apache Hose Company 5 and the Department. He feels an immense amount of pride for both of his sons. Farewell, Mr. Chief.
