Leopold Sommerfeld Obituary, Death – We are writing to let you know that Leopold Sommerfeld has gone away. This news has left us in a tremendous deal of anguish, and we feel that you should be aware of it. Leopold was the most influential leader of the Chevra Kadisha in Gothenburg, and the Jewish community had a lot of respect for him.
He passed away in the year 2016 in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the age of 97, having spent his entire life putting the requirements of others ahead of his own requirements. He came into the world in the year 1926. Following their wedding in Grajewo, Poland, his parents immigrated to the United States in order to get away from the pogroms that were occurring in Russia. He was the sixth kid of a family that had a total of eight members. He ended up marrying Rosie, a Czechoslovak woman who had survived the Auschwitz extermination camp.
They were successful in producing a lovely Jewish family that is devoted to Jewish tradition and that also has a strong sense of responsibility toward their friends, family, and community. He directed the “Yatke,” which was responsible for ensuring that kosher meat was available to a significant number of people over a protracted period of time.
Leopold is survived by his daughter Helene Sommerfeld (and her spouse Hkan Thorner), his sons Benny and Mikael (together with their wives Gitte and Irma), and six grandchildren. I pray that God will comfort the entire family as well as everyone else who is saddened by this loss. May God eternally bless the memory of him. The Swedish Vanforening to Magen David Adom has begun an insamling in memory of Leopold Sommerfeld z”l in collaboration with the family in order to contribute to the vital work that Magen David Adom does.
