Helen Ellis Obituary, Death- On April 13, 2023, at the age of 81, Helen Holmes Ellis, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and muse, died away at her home in Pasadena, California, with her family by her side.
She was born and raised in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and was the daughter of William F. Holmes Jr. and Helen Troy Bonner Holmes, both of whom passed away. After completing her high school education at Yazoo City High School, she attended the University of North Carolina in order to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree. She began her legal career at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama after earning a law degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa at the age of 43.
Helen cherished uncomplicated pleasures and was always up for an adventure. She would secretly put Valentine’s Day cards for you in your mailbox, and she always had Whitman’s sampler stashed somewhere in her dresser drawer. She had a soft spot in her heart for old dogs, pigs, and birds. She counted forty-five different cats among her pets when she was a child. During her time as a student at the university, she went on a trip to hear Malcolm X speak. When she wasn’t in a relationship, she worked as a waitress in a national park while living on a houseboat.
After getting married, she and her spouse established residences in the cities of Seattle, Washington; Santa Monica, California; and Anchorage, Alaska. After then, they settled in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, both in the state of Alabama, for about 40 years until making the journey to Pasadena more recently. She passed on the advice to her children that they should always be beautiful on the inside and that they should only marry men who, like her husband of 55 years, love them, love what they do, and encourage them to pursue their dreams.
She is survived by her husband, John E. “Mike” Ellis, as well as her daughters, Helen Michelle Ellis and husband Lex Haris of New York, New York, and Elizabeth Lawrence and husband Stefan Lawrence of Pasadena, California, as well as her two grandsons, Raiden, and Ellis Lawrence.
She is also survived by her husband John E. “Mike” Ellis. Helen is survived by her brother Will Holmes and his wife Marguerite, both of whom reside in Athens, Georgia. Donations can be made in memory of Helen Holmes Ellis to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society or the Crisis Center in Birmingham. Those who wish to pay tribute to Helen Holmes Ellis by remembering her via charitable acts are encouraged to do so.
