Harleigh Firkus Obituary, Death – Harleigh Ann Firkus, who had been identified as having the genetic disorder vascular Elhers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS), which is highly rare, suddenly passed away. Before the diagnosis was made for her in 2015, she had endured a number of lung procedures, the insertion of a chest tube, and knee surgery.
This was after she had sustained an ACL tear. She lost the battle against the vEDS at school when she had an aortic aneurysm. Harleigh remained cheerful and optimistic despite all of the difficulties she encountered and was kind to everyone. She loved to learn, had a perfect 4.0 GPA, and aspired to become an anesthesiologist in the future because they helped her feel better. She took a very active role in motivating her friends and sister to excel in their academic endeavors.
Harleigh loved moving her body and especially enjoyed competing in CrossFit events. She was incredibly passionate about weightlifting, and even after becoming hurt and being unable to lift, she kept active in the sport by showing good form and technique to others. The Borough of Amherst is putting up the Harleigh Games as a way to remember Harleigh and her legacy.
These fitness and health competitions will take place at the Amherst fairgrounds. In addition to games, there will also be a band, a DJ, a catered dinner, basket raffles, and other family-friendly activities. All proceeds will be donated to the Harleigh A. Firkus Scholarship Memorial. Please attend this event to express your support for the exceptional young woman who was so fervently loved by all of us and to celebrate her life.
