Estelle Chandler Obituary, Death – On Sunday, April 16, 2023, Estelle S. Chandler, 102, of Austin, Indiana, passed away in her home. She was the late E. A. and Nannie Barlow (Sanders) Stocker’s daughter and was born on June 2, 1920, in Madison County, Kentucky. On October 8, 1949, she wed Ellsworth W. Chandler, who died on April 28, 2000.
She belonged to the Austin Christian Church and had worked for US Shoe Corp in Crothersville, Indiana, before retiring. Estelle cherished her close-knit community of friends and family, baked her renowned banana zucchini bread, and preserved green beans from her own garden. At numerous neighborhood festivals, Ellsworth and Estelle sold “Chandlerburger Baskets” from their booths.
She always maintained in touch with the college-aged members of her church with encouraging emails, and she always had wise remarks on her homemade magnets and pen holders for everyone. On shards of her shredded wallpaper, she wrote individual cards for particular pals on important occasions. Her great-grandchildren are John, Elizabeth, Chandler, Olivia, and Matthew Hendren, as well as her grandsons Jeff Hendren of New York City, New York, Jon Hendren of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Scott Hendren of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Her parents, husband, son Rob Hendren, and six brothers—Stratton, Todd, Carl, Curtis, Clayborn, and Vernon Stocker—were all before her in death. The viewing will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin, Indiana. The funeral service will begin at noon, and Rev. Dave Huey will officiate. The Austin Christian Church will host a Celebration of Life at a later day and time. The family prefers donations instead of flowers be made to the Austin Christian Church Youth Fund in Austin, Indiana.
