Darryl Hunter Obituary, Death – Lieutenant Commander Darryl Maurice Hunter passed away on April 20 at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Before joining the United States Navy, where he served for the last 13 years as an officer, Hunter had an impressive athletic resume. Darryl was a four-year letterwinner and all-American on the track and field team at Dowling Catholic High School.
He wasn’t just an all-conference baseball player, but an all-state football player as well. He now has a permanent place in the Catholic Hall of Fame at Dowling College.
Darryl continued to excel in athletics at the US Naval Academy even after he switched his major to economics and joined Omega Psi Phi. He won 11 competitions in the shot put as a junior, including both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League championships.
After graduating in 2008, he was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer after having attended the United States Naval Academy. Darryl’s heart was the greatest muscle in his body, according to many who knew him, even though he could bench press more than 400 pounds and throw a shot put further than the entire state of Iowa.
His lifelong friendships and devotion to his family were hallmarks of his character. As much as he enjoyed gummy bears and sneakers, his friends and family were more important to him.
Darryl flew to Los Angeles to get a pair of the coveted, long-sold-out Air Jordan 1s; he has proven time and again that he will go to great lengths for his loved ones.
Darryl was an intelligent and witty communicator who could hold his own in any setting. He loved God, the basketball, the music, the friends, the family, and the brothers in his fraternity.
Darryl and his son Trenton often dressed alike, and he was quite proud of his fatherly role. The finishing touch to each outfit was a matching pair of Nikes.
Darryl is survived by his wife Kyra, their four daughters Kiana, Kaelyn, Kerrigan, and Trenton, his mother Latrice Janae Hunter, his grandmother Ermayne Hunter, and his aunt Linna Shuler (Randall), all of Del Valle, Texas.
