Betty Mitchell Obituary, Death – Betty “Birdie” Virginia Mitchell, died on Monday, April 24, 2023, in her Amherst County residence. Betty’s troubled younger brother Ervin affectionately referred to her as Birdie. Birdie was born in Nelson County, Virginia on August 17, 1947 to the late Plum Davis Campbell and Lillian Fitzgerald Campbell.
Birdie and her sister Juanita worked as nursing assistants at Amherst County’s Ryan’s Nursing Home. She left to pursue her aim of becoming an LPN, graduating from Lynchburg College with honours in May 1980. After earning her LPN certificate, she returned to Ryan as a charge nurse for four years. She leaped at the chance to be a chief nurse instructor at Old Dominion Job Corps, where she helped students prepare for CNA certification. Birdie was passionate about her job and, more importantly, her students. She had been there for over 23 years. She is renewing her LPN licence and furthering her knowledge through online psychology studies at Liberty University and James Madison University.
“Betty demonstrated the skills of a person in a supervisory role,” noted her Head Supervisor. She is a fantastic teacher that keeps all of her students engaged at all times. When dealing with sensitive situations in her classroom, she always utilised solid judgement. She will be sadly missed.” On September 15, 1992, she married Franklin Owen Mitchell, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. She enjoyed being with him and caring for him. Birdie enjoyed Facebook conversations and watching funny videos on her phone. She enjoyed sharing stories, cooking, completing crossword puzzles, painting rocks, and crafts with her family and friends.
Franklin Owen Mitchell, her beloved husband of 31 years; three sons, Johnny Proffitt (Rhonda), Michael Proffitt (Debbie), and Sherman Massie (Rosa), all of Shipman; and six grandkids, Ashley Oliver (Matthew), Kristy Proffitt, Michael Proffitt Jr. (Brandi), Justin Proffitt (Joy), and Sherman Massie (Rosa), all of Shipman; and In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Plum Harvey Campbell (Shirley), John Campbell (Audrey), Tinsley Davis Campbell, Woodrow Campbell (Phyllis), Plum Davis Campbell Jr., Juanita Burnley (Alvin), Ervin Campbell, William Hartman, and Paul Hartman.
The family would like to thank the Amherst Rescue Squad in particular for their assistance and generosity to mum while she was in need. On Monday, May 1, 2023, at 11 a.m., the funeral service will be held at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, followed by interment at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pastor Russell Snoddy and Rev. Sherman Massie will officiate. On Sunday, April 30, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m., the family will receive friends at the funeral home.
